Pakistan Super League | HBL PSL 9 2024

A men’s T-20 cricket league introduced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2016, named as Pakistan Super League (PSL) that held every year normally in February and March. Pakistan Super League – HBL PSL 9 2024 has been sponsored by Habib Bank Limited (HBL) since its inauguration.

HBL PSL is one of the top cricket leagues in the world where cricketers from Pakistan and all over the world participate to showcase their talent. Initially, HBL PSL contested among five city-based franchise teams then turned into six teams from its 3rd edition in 2018 till now. Every HBL PSL team is owned and operated by investors separately.

HBL PSL is based on a double round-robin format where each participant team plays the group stage matches. After finishing group stage matches, the top 4 teams qualify for the playoffs for the race of their place in the final.

A total of 8 editions of this league have been organized successfully and the preparations for HBL PSL 9 are beginning, promising to be another exciting and thrilling HBL PSL season. Two of the six teams, Islamabad United (IU) and Lahore Qalandars (LQ) are the only teams who won the title of HBL PSL twice which makes them the most consistent performers and successful teams. Lahore Qalandars are the current champions of the HBL PSL and the only team to defend its title successfully by winning the HBL PSL 8 2023.

History

Twenty-Twenty also known as T20, the new format of Cricket lit up this sport since its introduction at the international level in 2005. As this T20 format of cricket earns more love and attention than the other formats. The concept of the introduction of a league in cricket was born following the leagues of other sports like football.

The first professional T20 cricket league was held in England in 2003 which wasn’t the franchise base cricket league. So, the first ever franchise-base cricket league was introduced in the world of cricket by BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) in 2008 with the permission and consent of the ICC (International Cricket Board) which earned fame globally.

Following T20 Blas and IPL, other cricketing boards in the country decided to launch their own franchise-base cricket leagues like Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and others.

After many discussions and meetings about the league, it was officially announced in 2015 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to launch the country’s own Pakistan Super League (PSL). So, the much-awaited league for the betterment of Pakistan cricket finally began in February 2016 in the United Arab Emirates as the doors of international cricket were closed in Pakistan due to security concerns.

Pakistan Super League was one big step by the PCB towards the revival of international cricket back in Pakistan as a higher percentage of international players took part in the league. Two of Pakistan’s former captains signed with PCB as brand ambassadors of PSL for 3 years for its promotion.

The first two seasons of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) played with five teams. The names of these five participating teams were based on the provincial capitals and the federal capital of Pakistan. Later, the PSL management decided to add a sixth team which was added in the third season of the league in 2018. For the recruitment of local and international players, the organizers of PSL choose the drafting system which is used in many professional sports in America which is different from the auction system.

On 20 September 2015, the official logo of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was revealed by 3Di in a ceremony in Lahore which was attended by Pakistan’s current and retired cricketers and celebrities.

In December 2015, the organizers of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) sold the commercial rights for 93 million US dollars to the initial franchises for a period of ten years. Initially, in 2017, the market value of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was up to 300 million US dollars which has significantly increased in years since its inaugural season.

History was created at the Indian Premier League 2024 auction in Dubai on Tuesday with Mitchell Starc becoming the most expensive player in IPL history, with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquiring the Australian pacer’s services for a whopping bid of INR 24.75 crores.

In fact the IPL 2024 auction saw two players breach the 20 crore mark for the first time in the cash-rich T20 cricket league. Before Starc went for the record sum, his Aussie team-mate Pat Cummins was acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for 20.50 crore.

All-rounder Sam Curran was previously the most expensive player in IPL, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) shelling out INR 18.50 crore for the Englishman at last year’s auction.

A total of 332 players from 13 countries went under the hammer at the IPL 2024 auction. Of these, 216 were Indians. After player retention, releases and trades, a maximum of 77 slots, including 30 overseas player quotas, were left to be filled up by the 10 teams combined at the IPL 2024 auction.
